"It could take three to five months for bitcoin to re-test recent highs," H.C. Wainwright analyst Mike Colonnese told CNBC. BTC.CM= 3M mountain Bitcoin has fallen 11% this quarter Bitcoin miners offer high beta exposure to bitcoin and have historically outperformed it during bull cycles, he added. Colonnese also pointed out that corrections between 25% and 30% are "par for the course" for bitcoin, even in bull cycles. "Looking at previous price cycles, bitcoin has historically peaked between one to one and a half years after a halving event with the bull stage running longer in each subsequent cycle," Colonnese said. "Assuming a similar duration for this bull stage of the price cycle, bitcoin may not reach its cycle peak until October 2025," Colonnese added.

Retail dollars flowed out of bitcoin ETFs in April, and investors should adopt a cautious stance on the cryptocurrency for now, according to JPMorgan. "The past two weeks saw significant selling/profit taking with perhaps retail investors playing a bigger role than institutional investors," JPMorgan's Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said in a note Thursday. "Indeed, not only have spot bitcoin ETFs seen outflows in April but our proxies of the retail impulse into equities have also downshifted over the past month." Panigirtzoglou noted that in addition to crypto, retail investors also sold equities in April and that the impulse into stocks has also shifted down. "This is shown by … the net flow into equity funds including ETFs and mutual funds, typically used by retail investors … [which] turned negative in April after strong buying in February and March," he said.

Dado Ruvic | ReutersHong Kong on Tuesday launched six spot bitcoin and ether exchange traded funds — becoming the first in Asia to offer retail investors the ability to trade the cryptocurrencies at spot prices. The cryptocurrency ETFs were issued by three Chinese firms — China Asset Management, Bosera Asset Management, and Harvest Global Investments — on the Hong Kong exchange. Spot bitcoin ETFs by ChinaAMC, Bosera HashKey and Harvest were above 3% higher in early trading, but subsequently gave up some gains to trade by about 1.5% higher. The three ether ETFs were trading above 1% in the morning, but fell into negative territory by the late afternoon. The spot crypto ETFs had received regulatory approval under the provision of virtual asset management services, but crypto futures ETFs have been trading on the HKEX since late 2022.

Bitcoin's seven-month rally is on pause heading into May, now that two key catalysts investors had been closely watching this year – the bitcoin ETFs and the halving – are now behind them. The flagship cryptocurrency has fallen nearly 14% in April, according to Coin Metrics, and is on pace to post its first negative month in eight, and its worst month since November 2022, when FTX collapsed. However, it's proved to be a winning month in the previous halving years of 2012, 2016 and 2020. On Tuesday, Hong Kong bitcoin ETFs began trading. "Whether it's the next month or two months, you'll start to see more wealth management firms approve the ETF on their platforms.

Bitcoin rose slightly to start the week after the network on Friday completed its fourth ever halving, which reduces the incentives paid to bitcoin miners. The price of the cryptocurrency was last higher by 1.8% at $65,891.28, according to Coin Metrics. Shares of public cryptocurrency miners got a lift premarket Monday, after rallying into the close Friday before the halving, which took place later that day. The biggest miners, Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms , gained about 3% and 5%, respectively. CleanSpark and Iris Energy increased 3% and 4%, respectively.

watch nowThe Bitcoin network on Friday evening completed its fourth "halving," reducing the rewards earned by miners to 3.125 bitcoins from 6.25. After the 2012, 2016 and 2020 halvings, the bitcoin price ran up about 93x, 30x and 8x, respectively, from its halving day price to its cycle top. Hash rates are a measure of the computational power used to process transactions on the bitcoin network. "The market so far has seen bitcoin mining stocks as mere BTC proxies, in absence of bitcoin ETFs," said Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani. "[The] Bitcoin halving is already partially priced in by the market and we do not expect prices to increase significantly following the halving event," the firm's Marion Laboure said in a note Thursday, adding that it "has been widely anticipated in advance due to the nature of the Bitcoin algorithm."

Some bitcoin miners won't survive when the upcoming halving slashes their revenue in half, but the ones that do survive will thrive, and Rosenblatt Securities says TeraWulf is its top pick in the category. The firm initiated coverage of the bitcoin miner with a buy rating and $4.20 price target Tuesday. Mining stocks like TeraWulf offer amplified exposure to the bitcoin price, with enhanced returns during bull cycles but increased volatility in bear markets. TeraWulf's estimated cost to mine a bitcoin this year is about $25,000 ahead of the halving and $37,000 after. Miners have been hard at work to enhance their fleet efficiency and lower their operating costs — largely power costs.

Now, get ready for the "kimchi premium," named after the popular side dish of fermented vegetables that's a staple in Korean cuisine. The "kimchi premium" refers to the price gap in cryptocurrencies, especially bitcoin, when listed in South Korea versus those listed in U.S. or European exchanges. The kimchi premium is in the spotlight again after bitcoin reached all-time highs in mid-March, soaring past $73,000 to a record high on March 13, according to Coin Metrics data. According to cryptocurrency data provider Cryptoquant, the Korea Premium Index reached its highest level since May 2021 on March 16, reaching 10.88%. That means bitcoin's trading price in South Korea was roughly 10% higher than the global spot price.

Bitcoin fell for a second day to start the new month and quarter, amid rising Treasury yields and strength in the U.S. dollar. Data from CryptoQuant shows a spike in that exchange's reserves, which typically signals a boost in selling activity, that coincides with the sudden drop in bitcoin price late Monday night. Crypto exchange Coinbase fell 4%, while software provider MicroStrategy , which largely trade as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, lost nearly 7%. Investors are looking toward the bitcoin halving – which will slash the reward, and therefore revenue, of bitcoin miners – in the second half of the month. The event could hurt the performance of miners but historically has set bitcoin up for rallies of 300% or more in the months that follow.

The most important driver in second quarter for bitcoin and crypto, however, could be the Federal Reserve decision on interest rate cuts. Traders are now pricing in a roughly 61% chance of a first Fed rate cut taking place in June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool . Demand has increased from 40,000 bitcoin at the start of the year to 213,000 bitcoin currently, largely driven by ETF buying ahead of the late April Bitcoin halving, according to CryptoQuant. However, the SEC's decision on whether or not to allow spot ether ETFs to trade, due in May, will "very likely" be market moving, he added. "If it's not priced in today, then it very likely will be a market moving event if it happens," he said.

MicroStrategy , which trades as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, surged 20%, while Coinbase advanced 9%. The mining sector got a lift from bitcoin, too, with Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms up 4% and 9%, respectively. Bitcoin had been in correction mode for the past week, after it hit an all-time high of $73,797.68 on March 14. Sam Callahan, lead analyst at bitcoin services firm Swan Bitcoin, said it's likely tied to the messaging coming from the Federal Reserve last week. Despite its pullbacks, bitcoin is on pace to finish March on a winning note.

Like tech stocks, bitcoin sometimes benefits from low interest rates and improved market liquidity, which can lead to better sentiment and greater investment in growth assets. "When the Fed increased interest rates in 2022, it took out liquidity from the market, which impacted bitcoin and tech stocks. The excitement around the arrival of bitcoin ETFs and the subsequent surge to new highs for the cryptocurrency is making even bitcoin bulls raise their expectations. "We raise our long-held price estimate to the USD 150,000 level from USD 100,000 given the more rapid pass-through from ETF inflows to the BTC price to date," the note said. The new bitcoin ETFs have pulled in billions of dollars from investors since their January launch, even with the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust seeing heavy outflows. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has raked in more than $12 billion on its own, according to FactSet. The quick growth of the bitcoin ETFs has boosted confidence that there are more investors interested in crypto who have been reluctant to buy it through crypto exchanges.

Data from Coin Metrics shows bitcoin was trading above $72,000 late Thursday night before fall to about $67,000 on Friday, a decline of roughly 7%. Bitcoin is still up about 57% year to date, and the overnight drop came from near record highs. The cryptocurrency has climbed over the past few months, in part due to anticipation and then demand from the new bitcoin ETFs that launched in the U.S. in January. Rapid rallies and steep drops have been a recurring feature of bitcoin's history. Crypto optimists say that the volatility of the asset class should decline as bitcoin matures.

Relative to bitcoin , the initial price action following the upgrade is even weaker historically, with ether underperforming 80% of the time in the first 20 days, Saunders added. Saunders warned, however, that the trading environment for crypto is different today than it was during previous Ethereum network upgrades. The scalability problem Dencun follows the "Shapella" upgrade from almost a year ago, which allowed investors to withdraw their staked ether from the network for the first time. This upgrade is focused on the longer-term goal of enhancing Ethereum's ability to handle more activity and transactions as the network grows. "The Dencun upgrade serves as an important step in addressing this congestion, which hurts users and developers alike."

On Tuesday morning, bitcoin briefly reached an all-time high price of $69,210, according to Coin Metrics. The new record had been a long time coming: It's been over two years since the cryptocurrency reached its previous high of around $68,982 on Nov. 10, 2021. One factor that appears to be fueling bitcoin's recent rise is the debut of bitcoin ETFs. The digital token's rise also helped boost the price of other virtual coins, including ether, which reached its highest price level since January 2022 on Wednesday. Although bitcoin's recent success may make it tempting to buy in, think carefully before adding it or any other cryptocurrency to your investment portfolio.

On Tuesday bitcoin reached a new intraday record , for the first time since November 2021, of $69,210. It had been pushing higher for weeks – it's up 55% over the past month – and tumbled shortly after notching the new high. Bitcoin was last higher by 6% at $66,315.19, according to Coin Metrics, while ether rocketed more than 11% to $3,785.76, its highest level since January 2022. Cryptocurrencies bounced on Wednesday, recovering much of the losses from the previous day's sell-off, which came soon after bitcoin hit an all-time high. When traders use leverage to short bitcoin and the cryptocurrency's price rises, they buy bitcoin back from the market to close their positions, which pushes the price up and causes more positions to be liquidated.

Ether on Tuesday continued its march higher as the price of bitcoin took a breath. Bitcoin rose 1% to $68,833.45 and hit a record high above $69,000. "As has often happened in the past, bitcoin approaching record highs has caused a trickledown effect of adoption elsewhere in the ecosystem." With bitcoin up 19% in the past week, meme coins have gained about 175% in the same period, according to CoinGecko. Analysts point to them as evidence that retail investors, who have been absent for much of the recent crypto rally, are starting to return to the crypto market.

"Bitcoin reclaiming its all-time high yet again shows it is never going away," said Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital. Catalysts driving the surge in the cryptocurrency include the U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs that started trading earlier this year, along with the tightening bitcoin supply ahead of the late April "halving." "The odds have always been against bitcoin," Thorn said, citing naysayers who have referred to it as "a bubble" and compared it to the "tulip mania" in Holland during the 1600s. "Retail interest is oftentimes momentum driven, and all-time high levels are a pivotal momentum driver for even more investment," he told CNBC. Nevertheless, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have brought legitimacy to it and been hugely popular, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) passing $10 billion in assets under management last week.

Earlier, it rose to as much as $65,658.10, its highest level since November 2021. The price of bitcoin rose to start the week, edging even closer to its all-time high after the rally took a breather over the weekend. "What we're seeing today ... might well be a rerun of early last week when bitcoin surged $10,000 in the space of a couple of days. Investors have been extra eager to see bitcoin approach its all-time high. Nevertheless, long-term investors are confident that the combination of increasing demand for bitcoin through the new U.S. exchange-traded funds and a tighter supply expected after the April halving event will push the price of bitcoin to a new all-time high.

Bitcoin has soared more than 18% this week alone, after a week-long pause of this year's rally. "The economics of bitcoin dictate that it should continue to drive higher." Specifically, the halving, an event mandated in the Bitcoin code, reduces the bitcoin mining reward by half in order to limit the supply.
